On 18 August 2026, Busamed Lowveld Private Hospital proudly celebrated the completion of its 50th da Vinci robotic-assisted surgical case, marking an important milestone in the hospital’s journey towards bringing innovative and advanced surgical care to the Lowveld and surrounding communities.
The hospital officially launched its da Vinci Robotic Surgical System in May 2025, introducing robotic-assisted surgery to the region and strengthening Busamed Lowveld’s commitment to innovation, clinical excellence and improving access to advanced healthcare.
The 50th case was performed by Dr Jacques Henning, Urologist, who holds a special place in this journey as he was also the surgeon who performed Busamed Lowveld Private Hospital’s very first da Vinci case. Reaching the 50th case with the same surgeon who performed the hospital’s inaugural robotic procedure makes this milestone particularly significant.
Since the introduction of the da Vinci system, Busamed Lowveld Private Hospital has continued to build its expertise and capabilities in robotic-assisted surgery. Dr Brighton Mashava, Urologist, has also successfully obtained his qualifications to perform robotic-assisted procedures, further expanding the hospital’s robotic surgery team and the opportunities available to patients in the region.
Busamed Lowveld Private Hospital is currently the only hospital in Nelspruit and the surrounding Lowveld region with a da Vinci Robotic Surgical System, positioning the hospital at the forefront of surgical innovation in the area.
The Da Vinci system allows surgeons to perform complex procedures using advanced robotic technology, providing enhanced precision, control and visualization. Importantly, the technology does not replace the surgeon; rather, it gives highly trained surgeons advanced tools to perform procedures with greater precision.
Reaching 50 cases is more than simply a number. It represents 50 patients, 50 surgical journeys and countless hours of dedication from surgeons, theatre teams, nurses, anesthetists and the wider multidisciplinary team who have supported the hospital’s robotic surgery programme.
