"I finally got my confidence back": Puven Pillay's journey to a new beginning

For 14 years, Puven Pillay lived with a hernia that gradually changed more than just his health.

What started as a manageable condition slowly became a daily burden, affecting not only his comfort but also his confidence. As the hernia grew larger over the years, simple things like choosing what to wear or feeling comfortable in public became constant reminders of the condition he had learned to live with.

"I have been living with this for the past 14 years," Puven recalled. "For the first five years or so, it wasn't too bad because life was moving fast with my career. Before I knew it, it had gotten bigger, started becoming uncomfortable and really began lowering my confidence in my day-to-day life."

Although he experienced pain from time to time, it was the emotional impact that affected him the most.

"There used to be pain every now and then. However, the biggest challenge was my appearance in public. I felt limited in the clothes I wanted to wear and it really affected my confidence."

Everything changed when Puven was selected to receive a pro bono hernia repair through the UniversalCare@Busamed programme at Busamed Gateway Private Hospital.

"I was overwhelmed by the opportunity and so excited that finally things were going to start changing for the better."

Like many patients facing surgery for the first time, the day of the operation brought mixed emotions.

"It was the first time I had ever been in surgery, so of course I was stressed and scared. But I found comfort in the Busamed staff. They reassured me that everything would be just fine, and that really helped put my mind at ease."

Puven says the compassionate care he received from his surgeon, Dr Zaheer Moolla, gave him complete confidence throughout the journey.

"Dr Moolla is an excellent surgeon. He explained everything in detail and gave me the confidence to leave everything in his hands."

While recovery from an umbilical hernia repair has required patience, Puven says he has remained positive with the support of those around him.

"It's been difficult because there are quite a lot of restrictions during recovery, but with the help of my family and friends it has been okay so far."

Even in these early stages of recovery, the surgery has already transformed the way he feels about himself.

"It's giving me confidence every single day. I look great without something protruding in front of me," he said with a smile.

For Puven, that renewed confidence represents far more than a physical change. It is the freedom to enjoy life again without self-consciousness.

As he continues to heal, he is already looking forward to returning to the activities he loves most.

"I'm looking forward to getting back out there and doing the things I enjoy, especially going to the gym."

Puven describes the opportunity to receive treatment through the UniversalCare@Busamed initiative as a blessing that has changed not only his life, but also the lives of those closest to him.

"It's a true blessing and it has changed my life. My family and I are truly grateful."

Reflecting on the care he received, Puven has a heartfelt message for Dr Moolla and the entire Busamed Gateway team.

"You guys have a heart of gold when it comes to the wellbeing of people. You have gone beyond every expectation to give someone another chance at life itself. Well done, and please keep up this excellent work."

Having experienced such an act of compassion during Mandela Month has also changed the way he views giving back.

"This experience will always remind me of the opportunity I was given. It has inspired me to make a difference in the lives of others wherever I can."

Puven hopes his story will encourage others who may be living with conditions that affect their quality of life to seek help instead of suffering in silence.

"My message to anyone living with a condition that is affecting their quality of life is simple: don't suffer in silence. I understand that fear, uncertainty or even embarrassment can make it difficult to seek help, but taking that first step can make a huge difference."

He encourages people to reach out and explore the treatment options available to them.

"Speak to a healthcare professional, ask questions and find out what treatment options are available. There is no shame in asking for help. You deserve the opportunity to live a healthier, happier and more comfortable life. Early intervention and the right support can truly change your life."
