NGO Community Action Primary Health Model in Alexandra takeover launch by Busamed Modderfontein Private Hospital in Linbro Park

12 Nov 2019

Busamed Modderfontein Private Hospital officially takes over NGO Community Action – a Street-Based Primary Health Model in Alexandra township.

The launch took place at Alex Sankapano Resource Community Centre, Alexandra on 31 October 2019.

The venture and the Busamed collaboration with the Community Action Primary Health Model is a first for the Busamed Group.

The Alexandra community will benefit from this initiative and Busamed is excited to provide support to the project and to the community at large.

“The success of this project speaks for itself and when Busamed was approached to become involved in the programme, it was an easy decision to make. We feel privileged to be able to ensure continuance of this project by providing much needed support and resources to make a change at grassroots level and having an impact where it is needed most -in the community, in households and on a personal level,” Ms Elsa Benade, Hospital Manager.

Community Action was established in 2002 and founded and directed by Prof Selma Browde. The project was established after informal research identified inadequacies of existing HIV and TB programmes in the communities and was originally called Parents for AIDS Action.

Realising that HIV and TB cannot be taught in isolation, but needs to be part of a Comprehensive Primary Health Care Model, the name was changed to Community Action.

Community Action developed the Model over two years and it was piloted in 2800 households in Alexandra and Soweto. Monitored and evaluated professionally in 2007/8, it proved successful beyond expectations. Community involvement is however essential for success.
