Busamed Harrismith Private Hospital celebrated Trauma Day on Friday, 15th October 2021, to commemorate World Trauma Day, which is celebrated this year on Sunday, 17th October 2021. Successful emergency teams include all the different role players when saving lives. Thank you to all emergency staff who are dedicated to optimal emergency care to everyone!
The event showcased all personnel involved with trauma cases on a daily basis. This includes the Ambulance Services, Trauma staff and doctors, Radiology, Laboratory staff and ICU staff. Mr. Koputsa Chaka, the Emergency Unit Manager, gathered all personnel involved in an emergency and emphasized the importance each person plays in delivering emergency care.
The ambulance services - Emer-G-med, demonstrated their skills by explaining the onsite stabilization of a patient. The importance of the correct splinting methods were emphasized by the staff working for Buthelezi Ambulance Services. The staff from EMS – Villiers demonstrated the vacuum support system in stabilizing patients on scene.
The Trauma Unit staff, together with Dr M Tlale, had an interactive resuscitation event and then a transfer to ICU. Sr Letty Morajane, ICU Unit Manager, took everyone through the steps of receiving a patient in ICU from Emergency Unit.
Lancet representative, Menzi Khumalo, also explained their supporting role as pathologists in the emergency unit. He added that during the actual event it is quite busy and scary, and their role as pathologists are to assist with the diagnostics assessment of the patient. Dr Tlale also emphasized that the roles of both Labs and Radiology departments are extremely crucial to emergency care and saving lives of the patients, hence they are celebrated on this day.
The event was filled with clinical education and teachings on how to improve clinical outcomes for patients.
