Dr Andrew Asherson is Durban born and bred. He matriculated from Hilton College in 1992, and completed his undergraduate medical training at Stellenbosch University in 1998. After internship at Groote Schuur Hospital, and community service in the Cape Flats, Andrew moved to London, where, after completing the requisite post-graduate examinations, was admitted as a Member of the Royal College of Physicians of London (MRCP) in 2004.
Andrew returned to South Africa in 2013, having successfully completed his post-graduate Cardiology and Physician specialist training in London’s NHS Teaching Trusts of St Mary’s Hospital, Harefield Heart Hospital and St George’s Hospital, amongst others. He is registered as a Specialist Physician and Cardiologist with both the Health Professions Council of SA (HPCSA), and the General Medical Council (UK). Andrew manages most aspects of adult cardiology, with a broad skill-set ranging from complex transradial coronary angiography and intervention, to complex pacemaker/ICD implantation and transplant cardiology. Andrew currently leads the transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVI) service at Gateway Hospital, which he set up in 2019.
In recognition of commitment to career and clinical excellence, Andrew was conferred Fellowship of the European Society of Cardiology (FESC) in December 2018, and awarded Fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians of London (FRCP) in January 2020. He is an active member of SASCI and past Treasurer of the KZN branch of SA Heart Association, and is also currently a medical advisor to the Sharks rugby franchise.
