Obstetrician and Gynaecologist / OBGYN
MBCHB (UCT) FCOG (SA) MMed (O&G)

About

Dr Birdsey graduated from the University of Cape Town in 2007. After his internship, he spent 4 years doing general medicine in a rural hospital in Northern Kwazulu-Natal. During these years he oversaw the maternity department and spent a large part of his time counselling and treating women with gynaecological problems. He headed the academic department and was primarily responsible for training the nursing and medical staff in obstetric care

Graeme spent a short time as a medical officer in obstetrics at RK Khan Hospital in Chatsworth before specializing. Four years of intensive training and reflection continued to convince him that women require individualized and sensitive care in an environment where they feel comfortable to discuss their concerns about their health. He completed his training comfortably within the four years and in 2016 graduated with his FCOG from the College of Medicine of South Africa and his Masters in Medicine in Obstetrics and Gynaecology with a publication entitled, ‘Un-met counselling need amongst women accessing induced abortion service in KwaZulu Natal, South Africa.’ This publication highlighted the significant gaps in patient management as well the absence of patient- holistic care.

Graeme has worked for the last two years as a Consultant at R K Khan hospital. He has been primarily responsible for various high-risk obstetric clinics run from the unit as well as teaching and training registrars and interns. He is also an honorary lecturer at UKZN.

He has recently completed his Bachelors in Endoscopic surgery through the Gesea International Institute.

Graeme is the founder and director of Siyathemba which is an NPO that provides for the practical needs of women with crisis pregnancy’s. Graeme is currently a board member of Ukukhanya Life Care Centre, an NGO which provides palliative and compassionate care to children and adults with HIV.

He is a proud father of three daughters and married to an amazing wife who is also a medical doctor and a keen academic and is completing her Medical MSC in paediatric neurodevelopment. She also runs various NGO’s and is a provider of support both locally and internationally to families who have children who are deaf and hard of hearing.

In our current setting where there is a spectrum of treatment options, his practice aims to empower women to make choices that are best suited to them through patient centred counselling. He provides both routine and high-risk obstetric care and is interested in a wide range of surgical and non-surgical gynaecological care for women throughout their life course.

Dr Birdsey is contracted to most medical aids so co-payments, if at all, will be minimal. Please feel free to call and make a booking with his friendly staff.
