Dr Gounder obtained his MBChB from the University of Natal in 2003. He went on to serve his internship at RKKhan hospital and community service at Hlabisa Hospital, a district hospital in northern KwaZulu-Natal.
In 2006, he joined the department of Anaesthetics at RKKhan hospital, and obtained a Diploma in Anaesthetics through the Colleges of Medicine, South Africa.
He then worked in rural medicine in the South Coast of KwaZulu-Natal, as a Principal Medical Officer, at GJ Crookes hospital, and was involved in overseeing peripheral primary health care clinics.
In 2010, he joined the department of General Surgery as a registrar and subsequently transferred over to the department of Urology. In 2020, he became a Fellow of College of Urology of South Africa after successfully completing the college examination, as well as obtaining a Master of Medicine degree in Urology from the University of KwaZulu-Natal.
Dr Gounder joined the private sector after having spent more than 18 years working in the public sector of KwaZulu-Natal, of which 11 years were in the department of Urology. He is skilled in both open and endoscopic urological surgery. His vast experience in the public sector has instilled in him a compassion for community outreach.

Dr Gounder's ethos in his practice of medicine is strongly influenced by his deep spiritual convictions. He is currently the CEO of Christian Medical Fellowship South Africa and is a senior leader at his local church.
