About

Dr Maharaj is an experienced Cardiologist who is always willing to learn and apply the latest technology while utilizing all available state of the art resources when treating his patients.

Dr Maharaj started his medical profession as a physician at the King Edward Hospital in 2002. He then worked in private practice as a physician from 2002 – 2003, before enrolling as a Cardiology registrar from 2003 – 2005. His private practice as a Cardiologist was established in 2007. The reason why Dr Maharaj went into private practice was to expand by using cutting edge technology to treat patients with heart failure.

As an acknowledgement of his extraordinary work, Dr Maharaj was rewarded with a Gold Medal in Orthopaedic Surgery. Exceptional performance in the career of Dr Maharaj was that he was the first cardiologist in KZN to perform coronary lithotripsy.

Services:

Coronary Rotablation

Procedure that attempts to “bore out” a narrowing in a coronary artery that might not otherwise respond to stenting. The test involves the insertion of a long thin catheter into an artery in the groin or wrist under local anaesthetic.

Coronary Lithotripsy

The lithotripsy procedure is performed by using a catheter that is threaded into the narrowing from the wrist or leg artery and delivers sonic pressure waves to create a series of microfractures to break up problematic calcium.

TAVI

Transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) involves inserting a catheter into a blood vessel in your upper leg or chest and passing it towards your aortic valve.

ECMO

In extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), blood is pumped outside of your body to a heart-lung machine that removes carbon dioxide and sends oxygen-filled blood back to tissues in the body.

Coronary CTO revascularisation

Coronary revascularisation (widening of blocked or narrowed coronary arteries) is undertaken by using a procedure called coronary angioplasty where a balloon catheter is used to dilate the artery from within.

CRT-P/D implants

Cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) is the treatment to help your heart beat with the right rhythm. It uses a pacemaker to restore the timing pattern of the heartbeat. The CRT pacemaker coordinates the timing of the upper heart chambers (atria) and the lower heart chambers (ventricles).
