Dr Bill Nortjie was born at Wankie Colliery Hospital in 1954. He grew up in Livingstone, Zambia until he was 10 years old and then moved to Bulawayo, Zimbabwe. He attended High School at Gifford Technical High School, ending with A levels in Physics, Chemistry and Maths during 1966-1972.

Dr Bill Nortjie attended the University of Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe) Godfrey Huggins School of Medicine during 1973-1977. He was a Medical Intern, then SHO followed by Medical Officer at Bindura Rural Hospital.

Dr Bill Nortjie started Ophthalmology training in Harare at Medical School then completed in South Africa in Durban at Natal University obtaining the M.Med (Ophth) Natal and the FRCSEd (Ophth) from Edinburgh. In 2012, he was honoured nationally by his peers with the DJ Wood Award for his contribution to ophthalmology in South Africa.

Dr Bill Nortjie loves birding, wildlife and the outdoors.
