Dr Pohl qualified as a general surgeon from the University of Stellenbosch. Prior to that he worked in various surgical units in the country gaining vital surgical experience. It was during his training in the Eastern Cape that he met his wife, Berdine, who is currently a paediatrician in private practice.They have 3 daughters and a son. They enjoy travelling and spending time in the outdoors.
Dr Pohl takes interest in, amongst others, endocrine and breast surgery and has co-authored an international journal publication in the field of breast cancer. He has also recently worked as a consultant in the surgical critical care unit of Tygerberg Hospital.
He is a member of various professional surgical societies in South Africa
