Dr Cynthia Sathekga is an Orthopaedic Hand surgeon with a fellowship in Hand and Microsurgery from the esteemed Christine M. Kleinert Institute at the University of Louisville, Kentucky, in the USA. During her time at the Jishuitan Hospital, Beijing, China in 2015, she cemented her skills in Hand and Microsurgery with a special focus on work related hand injuries. She specialises in brachial plexus surgery, burn contractures, congenital deformities, sports and work related trauma injuries as well as general hand pathology.

Dr Cynthia Sathekga works at the Hand Unit in Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital, University of Witwatersrand as a consultant/attending and a lecturer. In addition, she is involved in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching as well as heading the Microsurgery course.

Procedures:

  • Replants- traumatic amputation forearm, wrist and hand
  • Trauma- elbow, wrist and hand fractures including soft tissue cover for open fractures
  • Nerves- brachial plexus and peripheral nerve surgery (Erbs palsy, post traumatic or compression neuropathies e.g Carpal Tunnel syndrome)
  • Joint contractures- secondary to burns, Dupuytrens or post traumatic
  • Congenital upper limb deformities
  • Lumps and bumps- soft tissue masses/swelling
  • Arthroplasty, arthroscopy and reconstruction
