For Mr Madhanlall Rajkumar, every day had become a quiet struggle. Living with lower GI bleeding had not only affected his physical health — leaving him weak and drained — but it had also weighed heavily on his emotional well-being.

“I was scared,” he admits, “and ashamed… especially when the bleeding happened in private or social settings.”
But on Monday, 14 July, everything changed.

As part of Busamed Gateway Private Hospital’s Mandela Day 2025 campaign — an initiative under the UniversalCare@Busamed programme — Mr Rajkumar received a life-changing surgical procedure performed by General Surgeon, Dr Z Moolla.
Offered entirely free of charge, this operation was one of 67 surgeries being done across the Busamed Group throughout July to honour the spirit of Nelson Mandela.

Dr Moolla, who volunteered his time and expertise for the day, shared, “Assisting people with surgical conditions who’ve been waiting for expert opinion and operations is very satisfying. The genuine relief and heartfelt gratitude seen from patients will always trump the financial gain. I’m hoping this surgery will cure Mr Rajkumar of his ailment and significantly improve his quality of life. Expediting his surgery with this initiative has reduced his waiting time by several months.”
He added, “I hope this is a recurring initiative by BGPH. It reminds us of the greater purpose in our profession.”

The surgery not only addressed Mr Rajkumar’s condition but also helped him reclaim a sense of dignity and hope. “I’m looking forward to living without the discomfort,” he says. “Hopefully the pain will be more settled now.”
He was especially grateful to the nursing team who made the experience less daunting. “The D Ward staff, especially Salma — they made my stay very pleasant.”
